Fox hires Sweeney

Mark Sweeney, a former Padres outfielder, will work for Fox Sports San Diego's regional TV network, this blog has learned.

Fox is planning pregame and postgame shows, each one hour in length, as part of its Padres coverage. Sweeney could contribute as an analyst or a reporter, and may see duty as a reporter during the game telecasts.

Sweeney played in the major leagues from 1995 to 2008 and was part of three playoff teams, including the Padres club that reached the 1998 World Series.

As a pinch-hitter, the left-hander batted .258 in 679 career at-bats with 15 home runs and 102 RBI. The talkative Sweeney, who liked to make his teammates laugh, played for every National League West team except the Diamondbacks and was also with the Cardinals, Reds and Brewers.

Sweeney, 42, has worked the last three years as an adviser to Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti. During the last two postseasons, he provided commentary for San Diego's local Fox affiliate.
