June newsstand

Here's a batch of Padres links -- U-T video tributes to Tony Gwynn, Mike Dee's GM search as it relates to mentor Larry Lucchino's successes, revisiting what I consider to be the best moment in Padres history and an ode to Gwynn's sense of humor. In light of the team's payroll inefficiencies, here's a story from last year about the bigger spending problem. The day Josh Byrnes was fired, I spun off a list of five potential GM candidates.

It'll be an emotional evening tonight at Petco Park. It was an absolute privilege to get to know Tony Gwynn. All the wonderful things you've heard about him really were true. He gave us all so much joy. My deepest condolences go to his family. We are sorry for your loss.

Five years ago...

Five years ago this month, an MLB scout I quoted said the Padres were headed toward five years of blah. The comment incensed Padres fans, who mocked the forecast in 2010 as the team won 90 games. But the scout pretty much nailed it. Now, he takes another look at the beleaguered team.

Scouts talk Padres draft

For my story at, scouts not affiliated with the Padres commented on the team's recent top draftees, Trea Turner and Michael Gettys.

Elsewhere, Gunslinger Towers' decision to demote Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill although he's owed about $17 million brought to mind the 2012 Pink Pony Scouts Chat, in which scouts yellow-flagged Cahill in his first spring training with Arizona. It's not surprising Towers is finding it more difficult to prop up pitchers in Arizona's ballpark than at the GM's former home yard.
